ABBY'S RATING SYSTEM
  Worth seeing multiple times.
Good, maybe I'll see it again.
Decent; I won't see it again.
  I won't recommend it.
  A complete waste of time.
  I can't believe a studio bought it.

Mini-Reviews of 2006 RELEASES:
  1. [The Illusionist:  Solid atmospheric, well plotted, quite engaging.
  2. [The Prestige:  Fun to watch and great character portrayals, but the story requires some stretches.
  3. [Night at the Museum:  Ben Stiller made this one funny, but the story is predictable.
  4. [Casino Royale:  Creative action sequences and fun character interaction, but typical James Bond plot.
  5. [Superman Returns:  Fun to watch, but the child subplot was lame, lame, lame.
  6. [The Holiday:  Trite romantic comedy with some cute chemistry between Cameron Diaz and Jude Law.
  7. [Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest:  Great eye candy, funny sequences, lame plot that destroys some of the character development from the first Pirates movie.
  8. [X-Men: The Last Stand:  Seems that less care and attention went into the third movie's screenplay.
  9. [The DaVinci Code:  Faithful rendition of a hard-to-swallow plot.
Mini-Reviews of 2005 RELEASES:
  1. [Serenity:  Space fantasy of high quality, great character interaction.
  2. [Just Friends:  Great romantic comedy, sweet, funny, and true to life.
  3. [Wallace and Gromit in Curse of the Wererabbit:  Fun, sweet, and doesn't take itself too seriously.
  4. [Madagascar:  Fun cartoon, fun characters, and an actual story.
  5. [March of the Penguins:  Beautiful, well-shot documentary.
  6. [Batman Begins:  Dark and interesting, a more humanist portrayal of Batman.
  7. [The 40 Year Old Virgin:  A comedy, the title says it all.
  8. [Robots:  Fun action sequences, a feel-good story, but the villains were a little too weak.
  9. [Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Johnny Depp):  Well done, but I don't understand why they bothered.
  10. [Sin City:  Loose plot, and I don't think I'll see it again, but the style and characters were pretty cool.
  11. [The Brothers Grimm:  Creepy, beautiful imagery, haunting soundtrack, rather lame plot.
  12. [Fantastic Four:  Not much heart went into this comic book adaptation.
  13. [Hitchhiker's Guide the Galaxy:  Faithful, too-serious adaptation of a tongue-in-cheek book.
  14. [King Kong (Peter Jackson version):  Amazing atmosphere and effects, an hour too long.
  15. [Aeon Flux:  Beautiful effects and no substance.
  16. [Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:  Crammed with plot points, disregards character development or cohesiveness.
  17. [War of the Worlds:  Another needless remake. Great effects, inconsistent ending.
  18. [Memoirs of a Geisha:  Slow, bland adaptation with some nice imagery.
  19. [Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith:  Better than episodes I and II, but still painful.
  20. [Chicken Little:  Hard to imagine that even a kid would find anything fresh or original in this one.
  21. [Elektra:  Worse than the trailers made it look, and worse than Daredevil.
Mini-Reviews of 2004 RELEASES:
  1. [The Incredibles:  One of my favorite movies. Brad Bird needs to do more!
  2. [The Return of the King Extended Edition:  Worth the four hours! It needed the scenes they'd cut.
  3. [Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:  Strangely enjoyable, despite a weird and sketchy premise.
  4. [Spider-Man 2:  Better than the first one, and well worth watching.
  5. [Hellboy:  It had heart, it didn't take itself too seriously, and it was fun.
  6. [Dawn of the Dead:  Suprisingly, a good zombie movie, treated with realism without taking it too seriously.
  7. [Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events:  Worth seeing, a dark children's tale with cool atmosphere and acting.
  8. [The Grudge:  Relentlessly scary, and lots of fun!
  9. [Shrek 2:  Funny, especially Antonio Banderas's rendition of Puss N Boots. Stick around for the credits.
  10. [Troy:  Buff men fight each other in skimpy outfits, well made Hollywood epic despite the cliches.
  11. [Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:  Better than the first two, still a bit incohesive.
  12. [The Bourne Supremacy:  Worth seeing, but watch The Bourne Identity first.
  13. [Secret Window:  A decent and direct adaptation of a Stephen King novella.
  14. [The Butterfly Effect:  A deeply layered, creepy SciFi story, despite a few plot holes.
  15. [The Chronicles of Riddick:  Beautiful designs, but didn't come close to living up to its hype.
  16. [Saved!:  Humorous glimpse into Bible Belt America, handled in a clumsy, too-obvious manner.
  17. [The Aviator:  A biography of Howard Hughes in which Martin Scorsese emphasized the psychodrama.
  18. [The Life Aquatic:  If you like The Royal Tennenbaums, you'll like this one. 'Nuff said.
  19. [Team America: World Police:  Hilarious, but not the sort of gags you can watch repeatedly.
  20. [Kill Bill Vol.2:  The Kill Bill duology is 100 percent Tarantino style.
  21. [Blade: Trinity:  Good, campy fun, better than Blade II in character and plot.
  22. [Meet the Fockers:  A good way to spend two hours, but don't go expecting much story.
  23. [Alien Vs. Predator:  Lots of fight scenes, and plot holes large enough to drive a spaceship through.
  24. [The Manchurian Candidate remake:  Eh. Meryl Streep plays a nice evil role.
  25. [Shaun of the Dead:  Dry, British humour around a bunch of loser characters and a flimsy plot.
  26. [Hidalgo:  I felt a bit dirty after seeing how much this biography was Hollywood-ized.
  27. [Resident Evil: Apocalypse:  A terribly disappointing sequel to a good movie.
  28. [The Forgotten:  Forgettable, like a low-budget made-for-TV flick.
  29. [Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow:  Dumb story with pretty dressing. It completely fails in its homage to 20th century pulp fiction.
  30. [The Day After Tomorrow:  Please don't pay money to support this crap.

      2005 movies that I WON'T SEE:
Son of the Mask      (Groan. And I loved the one with Jim Carrey.)

      2004 movies that I WON'T SEE:
Flight of the Phoenix      (They gave away the plot in the trailer, and the plot looks bad.)
Alexander      (The combo of director and cast have turned me off to it.)
Christmas With the Kranks      (John Grisham and Tim Allen: I'm thinking NO.)
Polar Express      (An affront to animators everywhere.)
Ocean's Twelve      (I'm tired of plot-less heist movies.)
National Treasure      (It looks like it's full of plot holes, and it has Nick Cage.)
I, Robot      (I'd rather not support people who'll use Asimov's name to sell a product he didn't write.)
