Mammoth Mountain, California

December 2005

Back to main page of photos
In the last week of December 2005, my friend Kendra invited me on a ski trip with her brother and his friend. We rented a condo that was minutes away from the slopes. It was like a cozy little house, complete with fireplace, large TVs, kitchen stocked with cooking supplies, a bookshelf, two bathrooms, and puffy pillows.

Here's the bunk beds where the guys slept!

Brrr!  This is what it looks like out the window.

Below: We're waiting at the bus stop with our ski gear. Mammoth provides a shuttle bus every 15 minutes to carry people to the slopes. The bus has racks for skis, and really took the stress out of getting there or storing equipment. If we forgot something, home was only 15 minutes away.

The jacuzzi! It's open all winter.

Mammoth Mountain has gondolas! Like the shuttle bus, they transport people to the slopes. And the view from a gondola is really wonderful.

So, I would have taken photos of the slopes . . . but it snowed every day except for one, and I didn't bring my camera for fear that it would get soaked. I wish I could show you the high speed detachable six-person chairlift! Oh, not to mention seeing sunset hit the Sierra Nevadas.

So I took a bunch of photos as we drove away.

Can you believe this is California?

But this town is at an elevation of about 8,000 feet.

Check out that snow line. I estimate that it starts around 8,000 feet.

Look at that weird formation.

An incredible pile of rocks. It's the size of a small mountain!
